Michiel Tadens of New Amsterdam

Michiel Tadens was born in abt. 1623 in Witzwort, a village on the peninsula Eiderstedt in the
German federal state Schleswig-Holstein. The village of Witzwort is just a few miles south of
Husum and of the island Nordstrand. Until 1864 Schleswig- Holstein was part of Denmark, so
Michiel Tadens was Danish.
He must have come to Amsterdam at a young age, where he was probably enlisted by the W.I.C.
to go to New Netherland, because we find him there in Jan. 1644 in a court record as a witness
to a fight in New Amsterdam 1.
Statement made on request of the Fiscal given by Michiel Tadens from Yderstee 20 years old.
Standing at the house of mr. Melijn, on the date as below, he heard Hans Hendricx, hired man of Sr.
Jochem Pietersz, requesting Jacob Hendricx van Dort to put him on board his ship, on which Jacob
van Dort replied I don't allow moffen [Germans] on my ship, which started a fight between them
that ended in pulling knives. (Jacob van Dort was the first to pull his knife). Hans Hendrickx said
let's fight this out. There were some attacks from both sides, which ended that Jacob van Dort
injured Hans Hendricx, which was proven by his wound. All this confirmed under oath by Michiel
Tadens. Acte dated 18 January 1644 in the fortress Amsterdam, Nieu Nederlant.

Michiel Tadens probably signed a contract with the W.I.C. under the condition that they would pay for
his passage, if he would work for them for a few years as a pay-back.
We know he was still in New Amsterdam in 1647, because he was witness at the baptism of the
daughter of Jurriaen Blanck, who later appeared to be his next-door neighbor in Pearl Street.
Two years later we find Michiel Tadens in Amsterdam, where he meets his bride, the nineteen year
old Annetje Eduarts, a Lutheran girl. Her father Eduart Dirckz accompanied them when they
announced their marriage intention at City Hall in Amsterdam.
This is what the document 2 says:

Compareerden voor Cornelis Abba & Jacob Hinlopen, comissariss~,
Michiel Tadenss, van Witswort, goutdraettrecker, out 26
jaer, woon~ byde Anthonispoort, vertoont acte van consent &
Annetie Eduwaertss, van A, out 19 jaer, woon~ inde Niewlely
straet, geasst. met Eduwaert Dierxsz.

straat, assisted by Eduwaert Dierxsz

Annetje Eduards came from a Lutheran family. Her parents Ede [Eduard or Yde] Dircksz
and Jannetje Andries had their banns published at City Hall in Amsterdam in 1622.

Ede Dircxen, from Jeveren [Jever], sailor, 26 years old, parents
dead, assisted by Dirck Albertsz, his cousin, living near
the Heiligeweg gate & Jannetien Andries from de Sont,
26 years old, parents dead, since 9 years living in the Keizerstraat

Eduard Dircksz and Jannetje Andries had at least 5 children:
1. Andries, baptized in the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam on 25 April 1627. 4
He married Annetje Ambrosius. They had their marriage intention published in Amsterdam on
1 April 1656. 5
2. Anneken, baptized in the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam on 21 February 1630. 6
She married Michiel Tadens.
3. Dirck, baptized in the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam on 23 January 1633. 7
4. Dirckje, baptized in the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam on 8 July 1635. 8
She married Paulus Framerick. They had their marriage intention published in Amsterdam on
13 March 1655. 9
5. Abraham, baptized in the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam on 26 September 1638. 10
He married Annetje Willems. They had their marriage intention published in Amsterdam on 6
October 1663. 11
Andries Eduards, Michiel Tadens' oldest brother-in-law [see above, nr. 1] seems to have spent some
time in New Amsterdam as agent for his brother-in-law Michiel Tadens. He is mentioned in the
following record: 12
8 Sept. 1653. Luycas Eldertsen, pltf. v/s Andries Eduaertsen, deft., says that by mischance a glass
had been broken in pieces at night by a dog or somebody else to him unknown in the house, hired of
Michiel Tadens, and whereas deft. proclaims in full company, that he has heard, pltf. had broken the
glass himself, demands that he name the person who so stated, so that he can clear himself. Deft. as
agent of Michiel Tadens in charge of the house says, he has indeed heard this, and to prevent any
further dispute that may arise therefrom, he is under no obligation to name the person. Parties
having been heard, were reprimanded for troubling the Court about such trifles and pltf's demand is
dismissed.
Almost three years later Andries Eduards is back in Amsterdam, where he marries Annetje
Ambrosius.

Michiel Tadens and his bride Annetje Eduards must have left Amsterdam shortly after their
marriage, because on 18 December 1650 their first-born was baptized in the DRC in New
Amsterdam. Michiel must have done well, because in 1652 he was able to buy his tavern in Pearl
Street.
1652 September 5 - At Fort Amsterdam in New Amsterdam, approved before council and signed
by coucillors "La Montagne" and Brian Newton, was a deed whereby a house and lot located on
Pearl Street in New Amsterdam was conveyed by Jan Snediger to Michiel Tadens.14
According to the 1660 map of New Amsterdam, the "Costello Plan”, Michiel Tadens' tavern was
situated between the house of skipper Jurriaen Blanck and the estate of Johannes van Beeck.
