Descendants of Evert Antonisz Vandergrift

by Elizabeth A. Johnson © 2013

Descendants - to the great-grandchildren.

NOTE: Surnames have been standardized and may not appear as 'Vandergrift' in the original records. The earlier family members did not use this surname, only their patronyms. The surname was used in Amsterdam as well as in the colonies. In Amsterdam, the surname is noted as early as 1653. When in doubt on what name was used in a record, obtain the record personally. I have digital images of the Amsterdam records of this group, and can provide them by request. If requesting from me, specify which record is wanted, and please use the Stadsarchief Amsterdam DTB number referenced in the Notes. My email address can be found in the sidebar.

Notes

1: Need Poorterboek of Amsterdam for October 1612. Sources note that it contains an entry for Evert Antonius Van Der Grist, a tailor from Charlois, and his sons Leendert, Jan and Abraham Evertse Van Der Grist, who have given their citizens oath the 26th day of October 1612. The Stadsarchief Amsterdam is in process of putting images from the Poorterboeks in their online database. But as of Sept. 2013, they have only the pages for January 1612 indexed and online. We need to see whether they signed the poorterboek with the Van der Grift surname, or not, or whether these men signed the poorterboek at all.

Translation EJ:
Pouwels Lenertsz. from Amsterdam 27, sailor, years accompanied by his mother Marrit Pouwels
and Jannetje Gerrits from Amsterdam 22 years, accompanied by her father Gerrit Gerhartss.

After settling in New Amsterdam, Paulus became involved in the government of New Netherland. In 1654 he accompanied Director Peter Stuyvesant on a voyage to Curacao in the West Indies. In 1655 Paulus was badly wounded by an axe in an Indian attack. In 1664, he had a role in the signing of the peace treaty between the Dutch and the Esopus Indians. Later in 1664, he was a signer of the Ratification of the Articles of Capitulation when New Netherland capitulated to the English.

Hazard's Annals of Delaware and Pennsylvania, p. 304 states that in the spring of 1660, Director Stuyvesant appointed a committee to go to New Amstel, now New Castle, Delaware, to investigate the murder of "certain savages" on the South River, now the Delaware. One of these was Paulus Lindert van De Graft, old burgomaster of Amsterdam.  Paulus Van der Grift was notably hot-tempered. At one point, the residents of New Amsterdam drew up a Remonstrance against him. Six years after New Amsterdam was surrendered to the English in 1664, Paulus packed up his family and returned to Amsterdam in 1670. His daughters went back to New York after marrying in Amsterdam, but the sons remained there.

Paulus Leenderts van der Grift may have returned briefly to New York in 1677, as his name appears in the New Amsterdam Dutch church records as a witness to the baptism of Jannetje van Tricht, the first child of his daughter Maritje on 30 May 1677 in New York. But it is doubtful to the writer that he did make such a visit. Paulus Vandergrift had been running a mercantile business in Amsterdam since 1671, and probably couldn't leave it for as long as it would take to voyage to New York and back. A round trip voyage between Amsterdam and New York would take a minimum of six months. He was 64 years old at the time of this 1677 baptism, and he died in Amsterdam only two years later. Probably Paulus never did revisit New York. More likely, at the baptism of Jannetje van Tricht, his role was as an honorary witness by proxy. This practice is not unprecedented in this church as well as in other Dutch Reform churches, such as those of Amsterdam and Cologne. The other witness, 'Grietie Vander Grist' in the 1677 baptism, was probably Margrietje, the mother's sister (wife of Jacob Mauritz), rather than Paulus' second wife who had no special relationship with Jannetje, already age 19 when her father remarried.

8: Sources: birth : Amsterdam marriage record states her age, but no baptism record was found in Amsterdam. Probably she was a longtime resident of Amsterdam, but born elsewhere.

10: If this is Leendert's marriage record, his age is advanced by 3 years, and his father is not dead, but still in New York. It is possible that Leendert Paulus Vandergrift was sent to school in Amsterdam prior to his father's return, and that he chose to marry without waiting for his father's consent. The occupation of Leendert van der Grift in this marriage record was Surgeon. His witness and that of the bride, Jan Teunnemans and Magdalena Dircks, were a couple who had married in Amsterdam in 1653.

Note: The Kuinder is a stream arising at the border of the provinces of Drenthe and Friesland. It runs southwest into Friesland and then into the northwestern edge of the province of Overijssel. The Kuinder once emptied into the Zuider Zee at the village of Kuinre on the border of Friesland and Overijssel, but due to empoldering, it no longer meets the Zuider Zee (now the Ijsselmeer). Much of this river (above Kuinre) is now a part of the Tjonger Kanaal.

13: An ancestor of the northern New Jersey Mowersons was Maurits Sluys Wachter, who married the widow Steenwyck. The name Sluiswachter is an occupational name, meaning the keeper of the lock or gate of a canal. The widow Steenwyck had two children by her first husband: Jannetie Steenwyck and Cornelis Steenwyck. Jannetje Steenwyck married John Van Gooten. Cornelis Steenwyck married Margareta de Riemer.

Jacob Maurits Sluys Wachter (Jacob Mowerson), married Margrietje VandeGrift. Jacob Mauritz was a mariner. He was the captain of the ship The Beurs of Amsterdam in 1674 and master of The Beaver of New York in 1684. In 1686 he was living on the east side of Broad Street in New York City.

Jacob was captain in the militia in 1681. He was a member of Lt. Gov. Jacob Leisler's council. After Leisler was hanged in 1691, Jacob Mauritz traveled to the Hauge where on 19 May 1691 he signed a letter to William and Mary protesting the execution. Jacob and Margariet moved to Elizabethtown probably about 1720.

Jacob's will was dated 3 Aug 1707 (with at least two codicills, the last dated Dec 1725) and it was probated in New York 25 Nov 1726, and in Elizabeth Town, NJ 17 Jan 1727. Margriet's will was dated 11 Mar 1727 in which she called herself "widow of Jacob of Elizabethtown, Essex County."

25: Jacob Vandergrift was in the service of the West India Company of Holland as Captain of the ship "Swol", which sailed between Curacao and New Netherland. It carried 22 guns and 76 men. In 1644 the "Swol" was brought to New Amsterdam where it was sold due to its aging condition. Jacob remained in New Amsterdam thereafter.

Jacob was for some years a burgomaster of New Amsterdam. In 1662 he was a resident of Bergen County, N.J., and in 1664 he and his wife were members of the church at Brooklyn, Long Island. He finally became a resident of Newtown, Long Island. A land patent for Newtown dated 28 Nov. 1686 and signed by Governor Dongan names “Jacob Leendertsen van der Grift”. This is a confirmation of the same patent from 1664 by Governor Nicolls.

----------------------------------------------
THE GRAHAM TRACT.

Feb. 3, 1683, letters patent were granted to James Graham, Samuel Winder, Cornelius Corsen, and John White for a tract of land said to contain "the just and full quantity of one thousand nine hundred and four acres of land, strict measure, but, allowance being made for swamp and highways, the same to remain for one thousand eight hundred English acres and no more.": It was surveyed Sept. 28, 1683. Its east line was Peter's Brook from the river until it bends to the west; south by Raritan River; west by the old patent line; north by the line of the other river lots. This tract was divided into four equal parts, each fronting on the river. It was agreed by the parties that the quarter of Cornelius Corsen was to lie on the easterly side of the tract; the second quarter was to John White, lying between Cornelius Corsen on the east and James Graham on the west; the third quarter was set off to James Graham, and was between John White on the east and Samuel Winder on the west; the fourth and last quarter was to Samuel Winder, and was west of James Graham, and to the west line of the old patent.

Cornelius Corsen was one of the proprietors of the tract spoken of as Indian Title No. 2. He was also interested in a company who took up land on Staten Island, known as Cornelius Corsen & Co. On page 103 of the record of the Governor and Council of East New Jersey, 1682-1703, reference is made to "the petition of James Graham, Samuel Winder, John White, and Cornelius Corsen to have a patent of the lands lately surveyed to them, lying on the Raritan River. Agreed that they have their said lands patented, they paying twopence an acre,-viz., purchasing at three halfpence an acre at twelve years purchase, and paying by pattent 1/2 d. p. acre." It is not probable that Cornelius Corsen ever lived here. He died in 1693. In Staten Island the surname Corson was retained; on the Raritan it seems to have been changed in some way to Vroom. Bergen, in the "History of the Bergen family," page 128, says "Hendrick Corsen (Vroom), baptized Nov. 20, 1653, marries Josina Pietersz, daughter of Pieter Van Nest, of Brooklyn, and Judith Rapalje, a granddaughter of Joris Janse Rapalie, and settled on the Raritan, near Somerville, about 1680, where his descendants are numerous, among whom is Governor Vroom, of New Jersey." Hendrick Corsen, as will be shown, purchased of Cornelius Corsen, in 1687, the half of the quarter of the section assigned to him. He also purchased a tract of 500 acres, which was surveyed to him June 10, 1688, "where South and North Branches meet,"--No. 37 on old map, now in Branchburg, north of Holland's Brook. June 6, 1687, Cornelius Corsen conveyed by deed the land he possessed on the Raritan to Peter Van Nostrand and Hendrick Corsen. The latter conveyed, Oct. 10, 1687, "the equal onehalf of one equal fourth part of the tract of land" (meaning the large tract) to Peter Van Nest, who, on June 22, 1724, conveyed a part of it to his son, Jeronimus Van Nest. June 16, 1771, Jeronimus conveyed a portion of this, in two tracts, to Jacob R. Hardenburgh. These two tracts were conveyed, Nov. 7, 1781, by Hardenburgh to William Paterson, Elias Boudinot, and Col. F. Frelinghuysen, in trust (350 acres), for the benefit of the children of John Hardenburgh and wife, to whom it was to descend after their death. The property was so conveyed, and, by act of Legislature, Jacob R. Hardenburgh and Andrew Howell were authorized to sell the land for their benefit. Joseph Annin sold it to Jacob R. Hardenburgh.

March 2, 1807, John Davenport purchased 109 acres of the north tract. This became the "Lottery Field," and in 1809 the land was divided into lots. It was also on this tract that the Somerset House Company purchased their land.

Peter Van Nest, who purchased of Hendrick Corsen, Oct. 10, 1687, was a son of Peter Van Nest, of Brooklyn, who came from the Netherlands in 1647. Peter, Jr., also lived in Brooklyn before he purchased this land. He married Margaretje Chrocheron, of Staten Island, April 13, 1684. His brother Jeronimus came soon after his settlement on the Raritan. Peter was a deputy for Somerset in the Assembly of East New Jersey in 1698, and was elected a deacon of the church of Raritan March 9, 1699, upon the organization of that church. The house of Peter Van Nest is said to have occupied the spot where now stands the residence of Mr. Dumont Frelinghuysen. Jerome is said to have lived where the old house now stands, formerly owned by Joseph Doty.

Van Nest's mill was well known among the early settlers. It is said to have 'been located near where the railroad bridge now crosses the river. The dam was about 160 yards above. A race from the mill led down the flat to near where the covered bridge now is. The bed of the river was different somewhat from its present course.

Peter's Brook was named after Peter Van Nest, who was living in 1720. His son Jerome, or Jeronimus, was in 1771 possessed of lands west of the "milllot," which he sold to Mr. Hardenburgh. Some of the family are still living in Somerville.

Abraham Van Nest, of New York, George Van Nest (known as "Prince George"), Rynear, and the Rev. Dr. Abraham R. Van Nest were descendants of the Peter Van Nest who lived at Somerville. The Van Nests who lived in what is now Branchburg were descendants also. Peter Van Nest purchased large tracts of land west of the North and South Branches, in Readington, and also in Piscataway township; the land was divided among his children. He had five sons-Peter, Jeronimus, John, George, and Bernardus-and four daughters,-Judith, Catharine, Gacamiacia or Jacquemin, and Hannah. It will be remembered that on June 6, 1687, Peter Van Nostrand purchased the east half of Cornelius Corsen's land.. How long he owned this tract is not known. His descendants lived in this township for many years, but not upon that place. In 1764, Jacob Van Ostrand, blacksmith, lived west of S. Staats Coejeman. His land and shop are both mentioned as stations in the relaying of the Great Road in that year. He was town clerk from 1758 to 1788.

Cornelius Tunison (of whom and his progeny we have most to write) was a descendant of Tennis Nyssen, or Denyse, who emigrated to this country from a village near Arnheim, in the province of Gilderland, in the Netherlands, as early as 1638, and died prior to 1663. He married Phebe, or Femmetje, the daughter of John Seals,* an Englishman, who came to New Amsterdam in 1658. He had eight children, of whom Jan Teunissen and Cornelius Teunissen were the two youngest. Jan Teunissen was baptized April 12, 1654. He married Catolina Tunis, daughter of Tunis Gysbertse Bogaert. His name appears at the organization of the First Church of Raritan, March 9, 1699, but does not occur in any deeds or grants. He undoubtedly came to the valley of the Raritan as early as his brother. In 1704 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives of New Jersey. His children were all baptized on Long Island, except Abraham, who was baptized at this First Church of Raritan, Sept. 19, 1699.
