As Swartwout researchers know, the Swartwout Chronicles by Arthur James Weise only concentrates on the American descendants of Roeloff Swartwout, the oldest son of Thomas Swartwout and Hendrickje Barents of Amsterdam. But several other children of Thomas and Hendrickje had families too, which might be of interest to get the complete picture of the Swartwout family. The following only contains data that I have found in the Amsterdam archives. In the notes you will find the complete transcriptions and translations of almost all marriages intentions. [Cor Snabel]

The Amsterdam branch of the family of

THOMAS SWARTWOUT AND HENDRICKJE BARENTS

Thomas Swartwout, born in Groningen about 1607, tobacco merchant in New Netherland and in Amsterdam, was buried 15 October 1679 in the Heiligewegs Kerkhof in Amsterdam.[1]

On 21 March 1630 he registered intentions [2] to marry with Ariaentje Symons, born about 1608 in Amsterdam, daughter of Symon Symonsz and Sientje Jans.[3] She died in 1630/1631.

They had one child:

Jan Swartwout, bapt. 1 January 1631 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[4]

On 10 May 1631 Thomas Swartwout registered intentions [5] to marry with Hendrickje Barents, born about 1612, died after 1675, daughter of Barent Otse and Jacomyntje Jans. [see below]

They had at least 7 children:

  1. Roeloff Swartwout, bapt. 1 June 1634 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[6] (sponsor at baptism: Machtelt Joosten, sister-in-law of his mother and Catryna Barents, sister of his mother). He moved to New Netherland and became the patriarch of the American Swartwout family.

  2. Cornelis Swartwout, bapt. 15 May 1636 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam,[7] (sponsors at baptism: Machtelt Joosten, sister-in-law of his mother and Risjen (Ryckje) Swartwout, sister of his father) glassmaker in the Breestraat. On 31 January 1660 he registered intentions [8] to marry with Hester Arents, born about 1641 in Haarlem.

They had at least 4 children:

          1. Annetje Swartwout, bapt. 9 January 1661 in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.[9]

          2. Arent Swartwout, bapt. 15 January 1662 in the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam.[10]

          3. Thomas Swartwout, bapt. 2 November 1664 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[11]

          4. Cornelis Swartwout, bapt. 23 December 1665 in the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam.[12]

  1. Barent Swartwout, bapt. 15 July 1638 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[13] (sponsors at baptism: Jan Barents, brother of his mother and Machtelt Barents, sister of his mother)

  2. Tryntje Swartwout, bapt. 15 Dec. 1639 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[14] (sponsors at baptism: Mary Jans and Aerjan Jans, both unknown) On 22 August 1671 she registered intentions [15] to marry with Coenraet Carelsz Koot, born about 1647 in Flekkerõ [Norway], sailor.

          They had 1 child:

          1. Hendrickje Koot, bapt. 27 April 1672 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[16]

  1. Jacomyntje Swartwout, bapt. 30 Nov. 1642 in the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam.[17] (sponsor at baptism: Machtelt Barents, sister of her mother)

  2. Jacomyntje Swartwout, bapt. 22 Febr. 1646 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam,[18] (sponsor at baptism: Geertruyd Swartwout, probably Geertruyd Schutte, wife of Harmen Swartwout) buried 10 February 1696 in the St. Anthonis Kerkhof in Amsterdam.[19] On 2 April 1672 she registered intentions [20] to marry with Arent Reddinger, born in Kampen, buried 21 September 1690 in the St. Anthonis Kerkhof in Amsterdam,[21] widower of Jannetje Jans, tailor in the Langestraat.

They had at least 5 children:

          1. Jacomyntje Reddinger, bapt. 2 April 1673 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[22]

          2. Catharina Reddinger, bapt. 31 Augustus 1674 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[23]

          3. Hendrickje Reddinger, bapt. 17 November 1677 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[24]

          4. Abraham Reddinger, bapt. 3 March 1680 in the Nieuwe Zyds Kapel in Amsterdam.[25]

          5. Hendrina Reddinger, bapt. 4 September 1683 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[26]

  1. Rachel Swartwout, bapt. 5 July 1648 in the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam,[27] (sponsor at baptism: Cataryna Tielmans, sister-in law of her mother) buried 11 January 1681 in the Heiligewegs Kerkhof in Amsterdam.[28] On 1 March 1675 she registered intentions [29] to marry with Jan Woutersz Swart, born in 1650 in Vollenhoven, buried 19 June 1697 in the Heiligewegs Kerkhof in Amsterdam,[30] miller.

They had at least 7 children:

          1. Wouter Swart, bapt. 1 January 1676 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[31]

          2. Hendrickje Swart, bapt. 21 September 1677 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam,[32]

buried 5 August 1678 in the St. Anthonis Kerkhof in Amsterdam.[33]

          3. Hendrickje Swart, bapt. 31 October 1680 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam,[34]

buried 16 September 1681 in the St. Anthonis Kerkhof in Amsterdam.[35]

          4. Femmetje Swart, bapt. 27 June 1683 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[36]

          5. Hendrickje Swart, bapt. 29 June 1686 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[37]

          6. Thomas Swart, bapt. 7 June 1689 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[38]

          7. Jan Swart, bapt. 21 December 1690 in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.[39]

Thomas Swartwout probably moved to New Netherland in 1652/1653 with his family, but he must have been back in Amsterdam at least at the end of 1662 when we find his name in the transport-akten (property transactions) in the Amsterdam archives:

On 29 December 1662 Thomas Swartwout, husband of Hendrickje Barents, sold a house and land in the Delversgang, near the Elandsgracht, to Dirck Danielsz Hasseling.

The family of

HENDRICKJE BARENTS, WIFE OF THOMAS SWARTWOUT

Barent Otsz (Smient) [40], born about 1585, well-known bookprinter on the Nieuwe Ossenmarkt, buried 7 December 1647 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[41] Son of Otto Cornelisz and Machtelt Diercx.[see note at 42] On 12 April 1608 he registered intention [42] to marry with Myntje [Jacomyntje] Jans, daughter of Jan Heyndrix.

They had at least 8 children:

  1. Selytje Barents, bapt. 19 March 1609 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[43]

  2. Henrick Barentsz, bapt. 17 August 1610 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[44]

  3. Hendrickje Barents, born about 1612 in Amsterdam.[45] She married Thomas Swartwout [see above]

  4. Otto Barentsz Smient, bapt. 10 July 1614 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam,[46] bookprinter on the Ossenmarkt. On 25 March 1634 he registered intention [47] to marry with Machtelt Joosten.

They had at least 9 children:

          1. Jacomyntje Smient, bapt. 13 July 1636 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[48]

          2. Joost Smient, bapt. 22 February 1638 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[49]

          3. Jacomyntje Smient, bapt. 24 January 1640 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[50]

          4. Jacomyntje Smient, bapt. 6 July 1642 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[51]

          5. Machtelt Smient, bapt. 27 December 1643 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[52]

          6. Barent Smient, bapt. 13 February 1645 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[53]

          7. Maritje Smient, bapt. 26 August 1646 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[54]

          8. Maritje Smient, bapt. 4 October 1648 in the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.[55]

          9. Barent Smient, bapt. 27 April 1651 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[56]

  1. Catryna Barents, born about 1615 in Amsterdam. Sponsor at bapt. of Roeloff Swartwout on 1 June 1634

  2. Selytje Barents, bapt. 2 April 1617 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[57]

  3. Machtelt Barents Smient, bapt. 19 February 1619 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[58] On 14 May 1648 she registered intention [59] to marry with Dirck Dircksz Uyttenbroeck.

They had at least 2 children:

          1. Machtelt Uyttenbroeck, bapt. 8 September 1650 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[60]

          2. Dirck Uyttenbroeck, bapt. 5 February 1654 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.[61]

  1. Jan Barentsz Smient, bapt. 2 June 1620 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.[62] On 23 April 1644 he registered intention [63] to marry with Catharyna Tielmans.

They had at least one child:

          1. Barent Smient, bapt. 26 February 1645 in the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam.[64]

I did not find the baptism record of Hendrickje Barents, the wife of Thomas Swartwout, neither did I find any record in which she used the surname 'Smient'. But in her marriage intention she is accompanied by her father Barent Ottsen, and the sponsors at the baptisms of her children are solid proof that she belongs in this family.

A few years before Thomas and Hendrickje left for New Netherland they sold a house. This is what can be found in the transport-akten (property transactions) in the Amsterdam archives:

On 28 May 1648 Jan Barent Smient and Thomas Swartwout, husband of Hendrickge Barents, are selling house and land in the Sint Pietersdwarsstraat to Otto Barentsz Smient.

So Thomas Swartwout and his brother-in-law Jan Barents Smient owned a house together and they sold it to the other brother-in-law Otto Barentsz Smient.
